These Invitrogen Power Blotter Pre-cut Membranes and Filters are designed for the transfer of proteins from two mini-size or one midi-size gel using the Power Blotter System. The pre-cut membranes and filters include 20 sheets of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and 80 sheets of absorbent blotting paper (0.85 mm thickness). Power Blotter Pre-cut Membranes and Filters combined with Power Blotter 1-Step Transfer Buffer allow for high-efficiency semi-dry transfer of proteins in less than 10 minutes.

Features of PVDF membranes:
High-quality—PVDF transfer membranes manufactured especially for protein transfer and western blot applications
High-binding affinity—provides excellent protein binding (240 μg/cm2), blocks easily, and is compatible with most organic solvents, acids, and mild bases
Convenient—pre-cut PVDF sheets are ready to use for transfer and blotting experiments from two standard precast and homemade mini-gels or one midi-size gel (8 cm x 13 cm); no need to cut your own membranes, minimizing damage and contamination
Validated—membrane and filter when combined provide the thickness and buffer capacity needed for optimal performance in the Power Blotter System

The PVDF membrane (0.45 μm pore size, low fluorescence) has higher binding capacity than nitrocellulose. The membrane is compatible with commonly used detection methods such as staining, immunodetection, and fluorescence. The proteins bind to the membrane through hydrophobic interactions. This membrane has lower background levels and increased sensitivity for fluorescent probing than regular PVDF or nitrocellulose membranes.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between the Power Blotter System and the Power Blotter XL System?

The Power Blotter System (Cat. No. PB0012) comes with the Power Blotter Station (Cat. No. PB0010) plus Power Blotter Cassette (Cat. No. PB0002). The Power Blotter System can transfer one midi or up to two mini gels at the same time. The Power Blotter XL System (Cat. No. PB0013) on the other hand comes with the Power Blotter Station (Cat. No. PB0010) plus Power Blotter XL Cassette (Cat. No. PB0003). The Power Blotter XL System can transfer up to two midi or four mini gels at the same time.

Is it possible to do gel staining with the Power Blotter System/Power Blotter XL System?

Even though the Power Blotter System/Power Blotter XL System does not have the staining program, this can be introduced. Please see the user guide for our Pierce Mini/Midi Gel Power Staining Kit (https://assets.thermofisher.com/TFS-Assets/LSG/manuals/MAN0017799_22839_22840_powerstain_midi_minigel_UG.pdf) for how to create a Custom Staining Method.

What is the material used for the anode and cathode plates of the Power Blotter Cassette/Power Blotter Cassette XL?

The top (cathode) is stainless steel and the bottom (anode) is platinum-coated stainless steel.
