Spexin hormone plays a role as a central modulator of cardiovasular and renal function and nociception. It also plays also a role in energy metabolism and storage and inhibits adrenocortical cell proliferation with minor stimulation on corticosteroid release. Spexin is cleaved into 2 chains - Spexin-1 and Spexin-2. Spexin-1 acts as a ligand for galanin receptors GALR2 and GALR3. Intracerebroventricular administration of Spexin-1 induces an increase in arterial blood pressure, a decrease in both heart rate and renal excretion and delayed natriuresis. Spexin-1 induces contraction of muscarinic-like stomach smooth muscles. Intraperitoneal administration of Spexin-1 induces a reduction in food consumption and body weight. Spexin-1 also inhibits long chain fatty acid uptake into adipocytes. Intracerebroventricular administration of Spexin-2 induces a decrease in heart rate, but no change in arterial pressure, and an increase in urine flow rate. Intraventricular administration of Spexin-1 and 2 also induces antinociceptive activity.
